Newport High School Graduation Celebration

What is Grad Knight?

The annual Grad Knight party is a chance to give our young people a wonderful memory, keep them alive, build a tradition and provide them a stress-free alternative.

About 20 minutes following the graduation ceremony at UW’s Alaska Airlines Pavilion (Hec Edmundson Pavilion) is an all-night event for seniors only (and adult chaperones). Newport PTSA coordinates this exciting and safe all-night celebration.

This is an evening filled with friends, food, games, prizes and the making of many great memories.

Why go?

Graduates don’t have to make a decision to drink or not to drink: there is no choice — and no chance to lose face.

Everyone has a party to attend and celebrate together. No one is left out.

It will be the last time seniors will be together as a class.

Parents will know where their students are, what they are doing and that they are safe while having the time of their lives. And parents can actually go to bed and get a good night’s sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.Who attends Grad Knight?

Traditionally 80% of the Newport graduates attend this event. No one from the Class of 2016 will want to miss this unique opportunity to be a part of a very special night together with friends for one last time. It promises to be an unforgettable night for our seniors – the final farewell and perfect send-off after 13 years of hard work. All NHS 2016 graduates who are qualified to participate in commencement can attend.

2.Why is it important to attend?

Prior to Grad Knight, graduates often “Party Hopped” in their effort to celebrate with as many of their classmates as possible. We will provide a safe, alcohol/drug free and fun alternative keeping kids off the roads and providing peace of mind to parents knowing that their kids are safely celebrating.

3.When is the event?

Grad Knight 2016 begins immediately following the graduation ceremony. There will be approximately 20-30 minutes following the ceremony for graduates to take photos with family members, change out of their caps and gowns, and check in for their memorable evening. Then they pull an “all-nighter!” The buses deliver the graduates back to Newport High School at approximately 5:30am the next morning.

4.Where will they be going? What will they do?

They will be whisked away to two venues reserved just for Newport’s graduating class. We keep the location secret to keep the graduates safe, to ensure that everyone has more fun, and to keep party-crashers out. They will eat plenty of food, enjoy lots of entertainment and activities, and enjoy spending time with their fellow graduates in a safe, fun environment.

5.Who sponsors Grad Knight?

Grad Knight is a PTSA-sponsored, non-profit event, orchestrated solely by parent volunteers. In order to host Grad Knight and keep event registration affordable, careful planning and fundraising must be done. The success of this event has always reflected the generous spirit of our community. Whether it’s supporting one of our many fundraisers or making a monetary donation, your contribution is greatly appreciated and is a vital part of our success.

1.Can I ride the same bus as my friends? How do we know which bus to get on?

Bus sign-ups take place in April/May. You can sign up with your friends as long as you’re all registered.

Following graduation, there will be a check-in table for each bus. Each table will display a large poster listing the names of those on the bus. The buses are organized by color, and you will be given a wristband that matches your bus color.

2.What can I take with me?

Please leave all personal belongings, including cell phones, wallets and purses at home or with a parent or guardian. Non-cell phone cameras are permitted if labeled with your name, but you are responsible for them. You will be asked to surrender any personal belongings (except cameras) at check-in. These will be returned to you at the end of the event.

To ensure the safety of all graduates, no alcohol, drugs, weapons or cell phones are permitted. Graduates will be searched before boarding buses.

3.What about personal toiletries? Medication?

We’ve got you covered. There will be boxes in each venue’s bathrooms (male and female) that contain items such as combs, brushes, deodorant, tampons and pads, etc.

There will be special boxes held by the chaperones for graduates who require medication during the course of the evening.

4.What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes and shoes.

5.When do we eat?

Each venue provides food and drinks. Please let the Grad Knight committee know in advance of any special food needs.

6.How do we get home? Can I leave early?

The buses return you to NHS and a parent/guardian will be required to drive you home. And no, once you have agreed to participate, you need to remain with the group until everyone is returned safely in the morning.

7.What happens if my child causes a problem at the party?

Chaperones will address any issues that arise and if needed, a parent will be contacted to pick up the child.

1.How much does it cost? What does that cover?

Registration is $200. The registration fee includes transportation, security, venues, entertainment, food and drinks. A big portion of the cost is bus transportation.

2.What forms of payment are accepted?

You may pay by personal check, cash, or credit card.

3.What if I can’t afford the registration fee?

Students should discuss getting a scholarship with their school counselor.

4.What is the refund policy? If my child does not graduate or decides not to attend, can I get my money back?

No, due to the advanced planning to organize this event, we are unable to give refunds.

5.How is this funded?

In order to keep the cost of registration affordable, Grad Knight holds several fundraisers. It is a tradition that any leftover funds are passed to the underclassmen as seed money for their Grad Knight events.

6.Can I make a tax deductible donation?

Yes! Donations of any amount are most welcome. Simply write one check and include your donation amount. Grad Knight is part of Newport PTSA, a 501(c)3 organization with EIN #91-1134396.

1.What paperwork is there?

There is a written release that parents/guardians need to sign for their children who will not be 18 years old by the time of graduation. Graduates who are 18 at the time of signing, can sign their own form. By law, they cannot sign until they are 18.

2.Why is there a Permission/Hold Harmless agreement?

This is a private party, and this agreement is required for the protection of everyone who is involved in putting the event together – parent volunteers, venues, entertainers, etc.
